Mokokchung

Mokokchung, the pictureque town of Nagaland with a population of more than 2.3 lakhs is the headquarters of the Ao Nagas. Situated at an altitude of 1,325 metres above sea level, Mokokchung is culturally and educationally advanced. The main festivals of the Aos are Moatsu and Tsungremong celebrated during the first week of May and August respectively. The footprints of Jina and Itiben - the Romeo and Juliet of the Aos - are found on the rocks in several places in the Aos ranges. Aos being cent percent Christian, Christmas and New Year are celebrated with enthusiasm. Christmas is a time when one can see the essence of Naga hospitality at the height. This is a time when everyone irrespective of their economic status welcome friends and guests with warm feelings. Mokokchung is 162 kilometres from Kohima via Wokha, 70 kilometres from Zunheboto, 115 kilometres from Tuensang, 102 kilometres from Amguri (Assam) and 103 kilometres from Mariani (Assam). The Mokokchung market is an interesting sight to pass through. Women sell their village produced such as green, dried vegetables, cereals and other non-timber forest produce here. Naga delicacies are also served everywhere.
