Longleng Longleng is the district headquarters of the Phoms. It is a
new district carved out of Tuensang district in early 2004. It is situated at an
altitude of 1066.30 metres above sea level. The distance from Kohima to Longleng
via Mokokchung and Wokha is 230 kilometres. From Kohima to Longleng via Dimapur
and Jorhat in Assam is 340 kilometres. The 34 kilometres stretch from National
Highway 61 at Changtongya to Longleng is a rough road and for the adventurous
and those who can rough it out, it presents a good opportunity to experience the
real feel of a rural road. Tamlu Sub-division, Yongnya and Sakshi Extra
Assistant Commissioner Headquarters lie in Longleng district. The Phoms were
formerly a sub-tribe of the Konyaks but they got their own new separate tribal
identity as Phoms commemorate this day every year on 6th of June as a day of
their awakening. The Phoms have preserved their log drums in their morungs even
though they have been converted to Christianity. As early morning scene in
Longleng Town presents an interesting spectacle as village folks come with their
rich bio-diversity - both cultivated and wild and vend it in the open space. The Global Open University has decided to have a Learning Centre for the 1,20,000 people of Longleng from June-July 2009 for conducting vocational courses for the young boys and girls of Longleng and the neighbouring areas.
